Don’t Wash too Often

We know what you’re thinking—isn’t it gross not to wash your hair every day? In fact, it’s actually healthier to shampoo your hair about three times a week. Washing your hair too often removes nearly all of its natural oils, which means your locks are more likely to become dry, brittle, and break.

Shower with Lukewarm Water

Showering with scalding hot water is another culprit that removes necessary natural oils, drying out hair and leaving it looking dull. To remedy this, simply wash with lukewarm or room temperature water.

Shampoo the Scalp, Condition the Ends

Hair is naturally oilier at the scalp and more dried out at the ends. Adjust your washing routine by applying more shampoo to your roots and using less on the ends. Do the opposite for conditioner—apply more heavily at the ends and use lightly on the roots to avoid making your scalp look greasy.

Don’t Rub your Hair with Your Towel

Once you’re out of the shower, it’s tempting to rub your hair with your towel to dry it off. While this does remove moisture, it can make your hair frizzy and damage your ends. Instead, squeeze the water out of your hair and pat it gently with your towel.

Wait to Brush

You probably have the urge to get all those knots and tangles out as soon as you step out of the shower. Resist this urge! Hair is extremely fragile when wet. If you brush it in this state, you can seriously tear and break it. Let your hair air dry a little bit before you begin to brush, and it will actually make brushing easier.

Air Dry Often

It’s always more beneficial to let your hair air dry. While blow-drying your hair makes it look nice at the moment, excessively applying heat can damage it over time.

Use Heat Protectant

We understand that some occasions call for a blow-dry or heat for styling. If this is the case, consider applying a heat protectant before you begin so you can prepare and strengthen your hair for the extra heat.

Only Curl or Straighten When Dry

If your locks have even the slightest amount of moisture in them, do not try to straighten or curl them. This is a recipe for scorching your hair!

Minimize Products

Your shower may be filled with products that promise to improve your hair in all sorts of ways. But the truth is, when it comes to hair care, less is more. Many products simply add unnecessary oils to your hair that leave it looking greasy. Keep a select few in your hair care arsenal. Our stylists can help you find the products that are right for you!
